“Work hard, stay determined, and you will never fail.” – Gary Player

2019 was another good year for our yard. We welcomed some new horses: Lunedi (Steven Flax), Alberich 10 (Imogen Hiltermann), Irmette (Jenna Myer), Borrelia Cool (Tania Siciliano), Callaho Lyanne (Amy Barnhoorn), Capital Casuarina (Kerryn Pretorius, and Premier Eclipse (James Curtin). We also welcomed Countess Gregory home after two years, during which time she had a gorgeous colt called Espionage, By Escapade III, as is Eclipse.

And speaking of babies . . . congratulations to our clients who had the great joy of having children in the last year: Gina Grobler (Matthew), Estee Sevenster-Smit (Nicola), Dominique Gibbison (Emily), Danielle Grobicki (Anna) and Fiona van Vollenstee, who had a beautiful baby boy!

Welcome!

We say hello to some new clients – Chantal Steyn, Leanie de Beer, Devon Brough, and Patrick Bannerman, welcomed back Georgie Cross and Lexi Menzies-Horton, and said a sad farewell to Caroline Spencer – we are very disappointed she has chosen UCT over us! Emma Kruger, who joined Burlington during 2019, has also gone off to varsity in Stellenbosch, whilst Stephanie Hiltermann has enrolled in a nutrition qualification out of Melbourne. Girls – you will be missed!

Mid-year Anna took four students to Holland for some tuition with Jan Verellen. This was an amazing experience! Great riding, wonderful horses and some top class shows – here’s Imogen meeting one of the very handsome and talented Phillipaerts brothers at the exciting Knokke horse show! We were privileged to attend a motivational sports psychology chat by Annette Paterakis, and visit the VDL stud and top-class veterinary clinic. We are thinking of doing another trip to Europe sometime this year, so watch this space if you’re interested!

Successful shows – Chris Clayden made us all super-proud by jumping her first ever 1,50m Derby on the wonderful Capital Chilli Pepper. David moved Escapade up to the 1,40m division, and Ceres into the 1,35m with prizes on a regular basis. The amazing Quadix excelled continuously and jumped his first 1,45m competition at the Burlington Cup show. Our juniors finished off the year on a high at SA Junior Champs, with several wins and many good placings. Throughout the year our clients contested classes up and down the grades with success. We also travelled to some awesome away shows – which are always a lot of fun, as you can see from this pic taken of the Burlington crew at Shongweni!

Every year brings its sadnesses and losses - 2019 was no different. This year we said goodbye to some special horses: our lovely elder statesmen Alzu Oarsman and Alessio, as well as Brandenburg Cato, and two very talented horses, Glensman and Quadix. Our heartfelt sympathies to all of you who have lost your special boys!

Burlington shows have maintained their popularity and we thank our loyal supporters! A huge “Thank You” to all our sponsors for the Burlington Cup event in November. The main class was covered by Radium Engineering, and the 1,40m Championship by Puresan. We have provided links to all our sponsors on our Burlington website. Please support them where possible. We have a group of regular officials, who commit to working at most of our shows, as well as the evergreen GP Ambulance service. We really appreciate your valuable contribution to our events. To all our clients, friends, hard-working staff and supporters, we wish you a happy new year. Looking forward to seeing you at our shows throughout the year!
